The Laguna Gloria Art Museum has its origins in the Texas Fine Arts Association, which was founded in 1911 "to encourage the advancement of art in Texas and to increase the possibilities of art experience for its communities and its people." Texas governor Joseph Draper Sayers (1841-1929) moved to Bastrop, Texas, from Mississippi with his father in 1851. Sayers attended the Bastrop Military Institute from 1852 until 1860 and joined the Confederate Army in 1861. The Texas Fine Arts Association was organized in 1911 (but originated in 1909 with Mrs. Joseph Dibrell's purchase of Elisabet Ney's studio, Formosa). In 1943, Clara Driscoll deeded Laguna Gloria to the Association. Both properties were later deeded to the City of Austin.
